How the Agent Actually Edits

Valmera prepares the source, applies editing operations and renders a preview. Frame and audio review tools help the agent inspect that preview and identify corrections. Use the completed preview to decide whether the edit meets your brief; a successful operation alone does not establish that.

The editing loop can repeat as the agent or you identify corrections. A preview check is evidence to review, not a guarantee of a correct result. You create the final export in Studio and check that file separately.

Source indexing is reused across requests, which can avoid repeating preparation. Editing time still depends on the operations, rendering and service availability. The project stores an edit decision list: source ranges and instructions for captions, music and effects. It is an internal project representation, not a promise of interchangeable Premiere, Resolve or Final Cut project files. Keep the original source and review restored cuts.

It also means the agent is swappable. An MCP catalog is generated from the same source registry and published over the Model Context Protocol, so Claude can run the edit-and-review loop from a conversation — with session tools and MCP-only safety exclusions layered on — covered below.

Direct the Edit, Then Review It

AI editing now has several operating models. A professional NLE adds assistive features to a timeline you run; a transcript suite makes words the editing surface; a clipper discovers social moments; and an agent-native editor accepts a result and changes the project. Valmera is that final kind—an agentic video editor: the AI is the editor, and your job is to describe the result and judge the preview.

Choose a workflow by the job you need to finish. A full recording, a short social excerpt and a precise multicamera edit have different requirements. Valmera can help assemble and revise supported footage edits, but does not run distribution experiments, manage shared team approvals or deliver editable NLE projects. Editing and generation can coexist in one product. For example, Runway Edit Studio uses Aleph to transform supplied footage. Decide whether your job needs changes to the picture itself, an assembled story from recorded material, or both. Specify any shots and spoken claims that must stay.

You use a browser interface while media processing runs in the cloud (see the online video editor page). How to Edit a Video with AI

   Create an account and upload an MP4, MOV, M4V, MKV or WebM within both the 14 GB and 3-hour limits. Wait for source preparation and inspect the transcript. AI editing requires a paid plan. Do not assume automatic speaker identification or perfect detection.

   Describe the result in plain English: "cut all the silences and filler words", "add karaoke captions and put chill music under my voice", "speed the middle section up to 1.5x". One request can cover several dependent steps at once — the agent sequences them itself.

Source preparation can be reused. Upload, indexing, rendering and revision times vary with the file, requested operations and service availability.

A First Edit You Can Evaluate

Start with a two-minute talking-head recording that contains a pause, a repeated sentence and a name. This is an illustrative brief, not a measured Valmera result. Ask for a shorter cut while preserving the complete explanation: “Remove the false start, keep the final take and the qualification after it, add readable captions, and keep the original voice without adding music.”

Approve the cut before adding music, motion or a second aspect ratio. Keep a note of the requests, corrections, elapsed waiting, credits used and final-file result. That gives you a useful cost and quality sample for your own footage; it does not establish a benchmark for every source.

Two Clocks: Why Captions Are Timed Against the Edit

Timing errors are easier to describe when you distinguish the recording from the edited program. Every edited video has two clocks running: source time, the position in your original recording, and output time, the position in the program a viewer watches. The moment you cut anything, everything after the cut moves.

Remove 9.0 seconds of dead air and a 1.0-second filler word from a 60-second recording and you have a 50-second program if both removals precede that line, speed stays normal, and there are no inserts or overlaps. A line spoken at 45.0s then plays at 35.0s. This illustration excludes any appended end card.

If a tool leaves source timestamps unchanged after removing earlier material, captions can appear late. In this simplified example the offset is ten seconds; tools that retime correctly avoid that error. The same applies to music that was fitted to the original length, to a zoom aimed at a timestamp, and to a J-cut or L-cut you asked for by ear.

Valmera uses source and program timing when applying editing decisions. That is why word-level timestamps matter more than sentence-level ones: cuts snap to word boundaries in source time, and captions are then timed against the resulting program rather than the recording. A combined brief can contain "cut the silences and add captions and put music under it" — ask the agent to sequence them, then check the completed result around every affected boundary.

16:9 to 9:16: What Reframing Actually Discards

Turning a horizontal video into a Shorts, Reels or TikTok upload is not a setting — it is a decision about what to throw away. A 9:16 window on a 1080p-tall frame is 608 pixels wide. Your 1920-wide picture loses about two thirds of its width.

Crop keeps the subject at full size and discards the edges — including whatever was in the corners. Pad keeps the entire frame and shrinks it, filling the rest with black or a blurred copy of the picture.

Valmera does both, plus 1:1 and 4:5, and it aims the crop rather than defaulting to centre — you can say "place the crop around the whiteboard for this section". Check caption layout and the resulting dimensions after reframing. A narrower crop retains less picture; it does not recover detail outside that crop or establish the quality of the encoded result. The trade-off is honest and unavoidable — read auto-reframe and aspect ratio for the mechanics, or resize a video to just do it.

What Valmera does not do is motion-track a moving subject through the crop. The frame can travel on keyframes you describe, but nothing locks onto a face and follows it automatically.

Edit from Inside Claude

If the agent is the editor, the agent can be swapped. Valmera publishes an editing and review catalog as a remote Model Context Protocol server — streamable HTTP, OAuth 2.1 with dynamic client registration and PKCE, so there is no token to copy and paste in the Claude app. Add it as a connector, sign in, and edit real footage from the conversation you are already in: upload, cut, caption, mix, render and download a review preview. Slow operations can return a job identifier. Use the available status or wait tools to distinguish ongoing work, failure and completion. Avoid concurrent edits from Studio and an MCP client; record the intended project and version and resolve a reported conflict before continuing. Review the Edit, the Reply and the Final File

Valmera uses edit records and verification checks to help ground the agent's replies. Those checks provide evidence about recorded operations, but do not guarantee that the requested result appears in the video. Compare the preview with the brief, including the words, frames and audio that must remain.

Listen around removed passages and check names, numbers and caption placement. Cut ranges can be restored, and the transcript is editable. Picture. No true crossfade or dissolve — the 7 transition styles are hard-cut accents, and one style applies at every cut rather than being chosen per cut. No motion tracking: overlays, stickers and censor regions do not follow a moving subject; inspect coverage after cuts and reframing. Slow motion duplicates frames rather than synthesising new ones, so heavy slow motion can visibly step.

Text and captions. Captions are burned into the video. There is no SRT or VTT import or export, and no chapter metadata — see burned-in captions vs subtitles for why that trade-off exists. Custom font uploads are not supported; bundled fonts ship with the product. Transcription quality varies with speech, language and the recording; no accuracy benchmark is claimed here.

Audio. No denoise or "studio sound" restoration, no per-speaker leveling or diarisation-based mixing. Music separation can rebalance speech and the remaining soundtrack in your original recording, but dense mixes may leave artifacts and need preview review. No AI music or song generation — music comes from real recordings found on the web or files you provide.

Scope and workflow. Multiple child clip projects can be created from selected story arcs, but candidate creation does not finish the batch: each clip needs its own editing, review and Studio export. There is no automatic A/B variant generation. No multi-cam — Valmera edits one main video plus inserted clips, music and voiceover, not several synchronised camera angles. No team seats, collaboration, comments, stored brand kits or share links. No direct publishing or scheduling to YouTube or TikTok — you export a file and post it yourself.
