Resize a Video for TikTok, Instagram and YouTube
Use 9:16 (1080×1920) for TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts, 4:5 (1080×1350) or 1:1 for the Instagram feed, and 16:9 (1920×1080) for regular YouTube. In practice, one 9:16 export covers TikTok, Reels and Shorts; a 4:5 export covers the Instagram feed; and the 16:9 edit serves YouTube and LinkedIn. Valmera outputs 9:16, 1:1, 4:5, 16:9 or the source shape. A 1080p source exports at 1080×1920 for 9:16; a 4K source exports at 2160×3840. Get Several Sizes from One Project
- Finish the edit in its original 16:9 and export it.
- Ask for “a 9:16 version.” The agent reframes every shot, and captions are laid out for the vertical frame.
- Review the preview and export again. Repeat for 4:5 or 1:1.
Each change is a new version of the edit decision list, and earlier versions stay in the project history, so the 16:9 cut is always one step away. “Go back to the original ratio” restores the source shape without undoing cuts or captions. If a platform rejects a file for its size in megabytes, the fix is compression, not a new shape: the bitrate calculator gives the bitrate that hits a target file size.
Does Resizing Reduce Quality?
Fitting keeps the whole picture, scaled down to fit the new frame. Cropping keeps part of the picture and enlarges it: a 9:16 crop of a 1920×1080 source is a 608×1080 window scaled to 1080×1920. A 4K source gives a 1215×2160 window, which holds more detail than a 1080×1920 vertical needs. Exports are rendered from your original file, not the lower-resolution preview. If verticals are the main output, shoot 4K or frame wider.
Limits
Valmera exports 9:16, 1:1, 4:5, 16:9 or the source shape; there’s no custom pixel size or cinema ratio such as 2.39:1. Scaling never adds detail the camera didn’t record. Each size is its own export, and Valmera doesn’t post to TikTok, Instagram or YouTube: download the MP4 and upload it yourself.
