Premiere Pro alternatives with AI editing

The closest professional replacements for Premiere Pro are DaVinci Resolve, which has a full free version, and Final Cut Pro on Mac and iPad. If you want AI to do more of the editing, Descript edits video as text with its Underlord agent; invideo, Cardboard and ChatCut put an AI agent on a timeline and can hand projects back to Premiere or Resolve; and Valmera edits your footage end to end from a plain-English brief, ready to export as a finished MP4.

Valmera publishes this guide and makes one of the tools in it. Competitor facts come from each vendor’s own site, checked October 6, 2026; sources are at the end.

First, what Premiere’s own AI already does

Adobe’s current feature list includes Generative Extend to lengthen clips, Media Intelligence to find footage from a plain-language description, text-based editing and Speech to Text captions in 18 languages, Enhance Speech, Object Mask, Auto Reframe, Color Match, and generated video and sound effects on the timeline. A free Premiere mobile app covers quick social edits. If those cover your needs, staying put is reasonable.

People usually switch for one of four reasons: they’d rather not pay for a subscription, they want AI to make the first cut or the whole edit, they work on Linux, an iPad or a phone, or they want to edit together in a browser.

The 8 Premiere Pro alternatives

DaVinci Resolve

Best for: Professional editing, color and audio, starting free

Resolve combines editing, color correction, visual effects, motion graphics and audio post in one app on Mac, Windows and Linux. The free version handles Ultra HD up to 60 fps. The paid Studio edition adds the AI Neural Engine: text-based editing, Magic Mask, smart reframing, IntelliSearch and more.

Good to know: Many of its AI features need the Studio edition.

Final Cut Pro

Best for: Mac and iPad editors who prefer a one-time purchase

Final Cut Pro’s AI features build on Apple Intelligence: Magnetic Mask isolates people and objects without a green screen, automatic captions and Transcript Search work from speech, Smooth Slo-Mo generates in-between frames, and Beat Detection maps your music. It’s part of Apple Creator Studio, and the Mac version is also sold as a one-time purchase on the App Store.

Good to know: Mac and iPad only.

CapCut

Best for: Quick social edits without a professional learning curve

Templates, auto captions, background removal, AI video and image generation, and Video Studio, which builds a video from a chat, across mobile, desktop and web.

Good to know: Free to try online. Valmera vs CapCut

Descript

Best for: Editing interviews, podcasts and tutorials as text

Delete words to cut the video, let Underlord, Descript’s agent, make bulk edits, and clean dialogue with Studio Sound. Descript exports the timeline to Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve or Final Cut Pro, so you can rough-cut in Descript and finish in a pro editor.

Good to know: Timeline export is on Creator, Business and Enterprise plans. Descript alternatives

invideo

Best for: An AI agent on a multitrack timeline, with generation

invideo’s editing agent logs every clip, applies one instruction across many shots and lets you take over at any frame. Generative models, custom agents and real-time multiplayer editing are built in, and you can export a video or a project for Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro or DaVinci Resolve.

Good to know: Its MCP server lets Claude, ChatGPT or Codex edit the same timeline. Valmera vs invideo

Cardboard

Best for: Agentic editing with generation, then a Resolve or Premiere handoff

Its Director agent builds an editable first cut from your footage, a prompt or both; refine it by chat or on the timeline, then export an MP4 or an NLE project. Cardboard’s changelog describes DaVinci Resolve exports that relink media and keep camera timecode, with the same care for Premiere handoffs.

Good to know: Chrome or Apple Silicon Mac; NLE exports start on its Starter plan. Cardboard alternatives

ChatCut

Best for: Chat editing with generated shots and an XML handoff

An AI panel and multitrack timeline on web, macOS and Windows. Generate missing shots with Seedance, Kling or MiniMax models, then export FCP7 XML for Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve, or an editable CapCut draft.

Good to know: XML can drop captions, text, effects and transitions, so rebuild those in Premiere. Valmera vs ChatCut

Valmera

Best for: Handing off the edit entirely

Skip the timeline-first workflow and describe the result. Valmera’s agent cuts dead air and retakes, adds word-timed captions, reframes, adds b-roll, music and sound effects, checks a rendered preview and exports a full-resolution MP4 from your original file. You can still adjust the timeline, or run the edit from Claude or ChatGPT over MCP.

Good to know: It delivers a finished MP4, not a Premiere project, and burns captions in. Valmera vs Premiere Pro

How to choose

  • Stay professional, drop the subscription: DaVinci Resolve (free version) or Final Cut Pro (also sold as a one-time purchase for Mac).
  • AI rough cut, finish in a pro editor: Descript, invideo, Cardboard or ChatCut, all of which export to Premiere or Resolve.
  • AI delivers the finished video: Valmera.
  • Social-first, any device: CapCut.
  • Edit from Claude or ChatGPT: Valmera and invideo run remote MCP servers.

Describe the edit instead of building it

  1. Upload your footage in Studio (MP4, MOV, M4V, MKV or WebM, up to 14 GB and 3 hours).
  2. Describe the edit. The agent cuts, captions, reframes and adds media.
  3. Review the preview it has already checked; revise in chat or on the timeline.
  4. Export a full-resolution MP4, or have your assistant call export_final over MCP.

Prompts to paste:

Make a 90-second cut of this interview: keep the answers about pricing and onboarding, remove retakes and dead air, add captions, and end on a title card.
Give me a 16:9 master and a 9:16 version with punch-ins on the key lines.

Creating an account and uploading are free. Editing requires a subscription. See plans. Related: text-based editing, auto reframe, add b-roll.

Valmera’s limits

  • No XML or project export; it delivers an H.264 MP4. Captions are burned in, with no SRT/VTT import or export.
  • No custom font uploads, true crossfades or dissolves, or motion-tracked stickers.
  • No audio denoise or AI music generation, no team seats and no direct social publishing yet.
  • It edits footage you provide; it doesn’t generate video. Paid exports end with a brief Valmera end card.
