Valmera vs ChatCut: footage-first agent or chat editor with generation?

ChatCut and Valmera both let you edit video by describing it. ChatCut is a chat-plus-timeline editor that also generates shots, music, voiceovers and avatars, runs on the web, macOS and Windows, and hands projects to Premiere, DaVinci Resolve or CapCut. Valmera is footage-first: its agent edits the recording you upload (cuts, captions, reframing, b-roll, music), checks a rendered preview and exports a full-quality MP4, from Studio or from Claude, ChatGPT and other MCP clients.

Valmera publishes this comparison. ChatCut details come from chatcut.io and its docs, checked October 6, 2026; see sources.

Pick ChatCut when you want generated shots inside the edit, a desktop app with local media, SRT subtitles, or an XML or CapCut handoff to another editor.

Pick Valmera when nothing on screen should be AI-generated and you want an agent to deliver a checked, finished MP4, including from Claude or ChatGPT on the web.

The biggest difference: real footage only, or generation too

ChatCut treats generation as part of editing: if a shot is missing, generate it with Seedance, Kling or MiniMax and cut it on the same timeline, then add AI music, a cloned voice or an avatar. That suits ads, explainers and story pieces where you don’t have every shot.

Valmera never invents footage. Its agent reads a word-level transcript and watches the frames of your recording, then cuts, captions, reframes, adds stock b-roll, music and sound effects, renders a preview, checks it and fixes what it finds before reporting back. That suits interviews, podcasts, tutorials and product demos, where the speaker’s words and face must stay real. See AI video editor vs generator.

Connecting Claude, ChatGPT or Codex

ChatCut’s Agent Plugin installs from desktop apps (Claude Code, Codex and WorkBuddy) and opens the editor in the app’s browser panel; its docs say not to install it from Claude’s or ChatGPT’s websites. ChatCut Desktop can also run local agents such as Codex CLI against an open project.

Valmera is a remote MCP server at https://valmera.io/mcp/server with OAuth sign-in, so the same connection works in claude.ai, Claude Desktop, Claude Code, ChatGPT, Cursor, Codex and VS Code. Your assistant gets 143 tools (live server card, October 2026) and can export the final MP4 itself with export_final. Start with Valmera’s MCP guide.

When ChatCut is the better choice

  • You need shots, images or music you don’t have, generated inside the edit.
  • You want a native macOS or Windows app that reads local media and exports locally in 4K.
  • You need SRT subtitles, captions in many languages or AI translation.
  • You hand the timeline to an editor in Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve or CapCut.

Try the same edit in Valmera

  1. Upload a recording in Studio (MP4, MOV, M4V, MKV or WebM, up to 14 GB and 3 hours).
  2. Describe the edit in chat, or ask your assistant to do it over MCP.
  3. Review the preview the agent has already checked; revise in chat or on the timeline.
  4. Export a full-resolution MP4 rendered from your original file.

Prompts to paste:

Cut the dead air and every filler word, keep my last take of each line, add bold captions and give me a 9:16 version.
Find the three strongest 45-second moments in this interview and make each a vertical short with captions.
Add b-roll over the part where I explain pricing, and duck the music under my voice.

Creating an account and uploading are free. Editing requires a subscription. See plans.

Valmera’s limits

  • No video generation; it edits footage you provide.
  • Captions are burned in, with no SRT/VTT import or export. English is the best-tested transcription language.
  • No XML or project export, team seats, direct social publishing, custom font uploads, audio denoise or AI music generation yet.
  • Paid exports end with a brief Valmera end card.

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on the video. ChatCut is the better fit when you want generated shots, music or avatars inside the edit, a desktop app, SRT files or a Premiere, DaVinci Resolve or CapCut handoff. Valmera is the better fit when nothing should be AI-generated and you want an agent to deliver a checked, full-quality MP4 with less hands-on work.
Yes. As of October 6, 2026, ChatCut generates shots with Seedance 2.5 and 2.0, Kling 3.0 and MiniMax H3, plus images, motion graphics, music, voiceovers and avatars. Valmera doesn’t generate footage; it edits what you upload.
Both connect to outside agents. ChatCut’s Agent Plugin installs in the Claude Code, Codex and WorkBuddy desktop apps, and its docs say not to install it from Claude’s or ChatGPT’s websites. Valmera is a remote MCP server at https://valmera.io/mcp/server that works from claude.ai, Claude Desktop, Claude Code, ChatGPT, Cursor, Codex and VS Code.
ChatCut exports FCP7 XML for Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve, though its docs note that captions, text, effects and transitions can be dropped. Valmera delivers a finished H.264 MP4 rather than an editable project.
ChatCut gives you transcript editing to cut by hand. Valmera’s agent does the cleanup from one brief: it cuts filler, retakes and dead air against a word-level transcript, adds captions, reframes and checks the preview, on files up to 14 GB and 3 hours.
Valmera for a footage-first agent that exports a finished MP4; Vyra for chat plus a full timeline with your own AI; Cardboard for an agent with generation and a Mac app; invideo for an agent on a multitrack editor with a remote MCP server; and Descript for transcript-first editing with Underlord.
