Descript vs OpusClip: Editing, Clips and Export Limits
Both Descript and OpusClip can generate and revise clips. Evaluate Descript when recording, episode editing and clips belong in one project workflow. Evaluate OpusClip when selecting from recordings, correcting clips and distributing them are the main job. Your required corrections and final files can matter more than the initial batch.
Valmera publishes this comparison and sells a competing editor. We checked the linked primary sources and public browser pages on September 8, 2026. We have not measured comparative editing speed, output quality or audience results. The exercise below is a proposed trial.

Descript's Create Clips guide offers 1–20 clips, lengths from 10 seconds to five minutes, optional layouts and topic criteria. Results become separate compositions that you can edit. You can also ask Underlord to create clips or revise the project. Clip production is not restricted to a single manually assembled excerpt.
OpusClip's trim-and-extend guide explains how to bring another section from the source transcript into a clip, delete text and adjust boundaries. Its timeline guide permits dragging sections into a different order. Test the exact repair you need, such as restoring a qualifying sentence, before treating the initial selection as final.
The OpusClip Virality Score guide currently describes a 0–99 scale for Starter and Pro. It lists hook, flow, value and trend among its criteria. Use the ordering as a starting point for review; it does not establish how many views you will receive or how much review time you will save. Watch the actual beginning, ending and context of each candidate.
Source length, clip length and export limits are separate
OpusClip's source-length help says up to 10 hours. Its clip-length help describes an Auto default of 0–3 minutes; the pricing table also lists custom ranges through 10–15 minutes. Neither a default nor a maximum upload duration establishes the longest finished program you can comfortably edit.
OpusClip upload-size discrepancy: the local-upload help states 10 GB, while the current pricing comparison lists 30 GB for Pro and Business and 10 GB for Free and Starter. Check the intended plan's uploader before moving a large source. The help page also flags non-integer frame rates; test your actual source format.
For Descript, check the import method and delivery destination separately. Follow the local-file import guide for a saved recording. Its current YouTube export guide lists a one-hour maximum on Free/Hobbyist and three hours on Creator and higher. These are limits of that publishing route, not a universal maximum for every local source or export.

Sources: Descript pricing and OpusClip pricing. Annual prices are full-year commitments. Check taxes, additional usage, required editor seats and the exact pack selection. A lower annual equivalent is not a month-to-month subscription.
OpusClip Free lists 60 monthly credits, watermarked output, no editing and a three-day export window. Descript's current pages disagree on Free export branding and AI-credit renewal; read the two-source Free-plan explanation. Test an actual download and the account limits before planning recurring free delivery.
Worked workload, not a performance test: three 60-minute recordings total 180 source minutes. Twelve desired clips at 90 seconds each total 18 finished minutes. OpusClip's credit rules would meter one processing pass over those full sources at 180 credits. That exceeds a fresh Starter allowance of 150 and fits within Pro's 300 before other use. It does not guarantee twelve acceptable clips.
Descript separates media hours from AI credits. Check both meters for clip generation and revisions. In either product, keep a record of repeated processing, added AI operations, unused allowance and correction time. Dividing a subscription by its maximum media capacity does not tell you the cost of an accepted final video.
Test the package that leaves the editor

Descript documents SRT and VTT subtitle export. Its timeline guide lists Creator, Business and Enterprise access, with format-specific losses. The interchange chart excludes titles, transitions and several effects; its caption row differs by destination. Keep a reference render for comparison.
OpusClip's Pro Premiere-export guide includes media, XML and a separate timed SRT file. Styled animated captions transfer as overlays, rather than editable Premiere captions; import the SRT when you need to restyle subtitles. The guide says to export individual clips separately and gives 1.5 hours as its recommended XML maximum for stable performance. A ten-hour accepted source does not establish a ten-hour handoff.
For distribution, check OpusClip's plan-specific posting and scheduling. Descript's YouTube export guide describes a web-only integration and says Shorts require a manual download and upload. Exporting a file, publishing a share page and scheduling a social post are different delivery steps.
Descript's share-page guide identifies another delivery trap: after editing, update the web link before downloading from it, or the download can still contain the previous published version. A local export can save the current composition without updating the share page. Check which version you actually deliver.
For agents and integrations, Descript's API supports imports, Underlord edits, transcript export and publishing to share links with signed media URLs. Its current rendered-file workflow requires publishing. OpusClip lists API access on Pro beta, Max and Business, with plan-specific limits. Verify the operation, permissions, usage and returned file required by your integration.
Try one interview and four requested clips
- 1Define the same source and outputsUse one 60-minute interview you have permission to process. Request four 90-second clips, each explaining a different point. Mark the original source timestamps for one required passage. These are proposed deliverables, not measured results.
- 2Guide the selectionIn Descript, use Create Clips criteria or an Underlord request. In OpusClip, set the processing timeframe and clipping criteria available on the chosen plan. Record whether the required passage appears and whether each clip makes sense independently.
- 3Make two concrete repairsRestore the sentence that qualifies a claim, then correct a proper name in the captions. Also check the first and last spoken word. Record the controls used, time spent and added usage; do not count a completed request as an accepted correction.
- 4Review the frame and soundtrackWatch each clip through. Keep the intended speaker or demonstration visible, check overlays against the destination interface, and listen for cut-off words or distracting music. Count clips you accept separately from clips generated.
- 5Test delivery before decidingDownload the final video and required subtitles, and import an editable package if that is part of the job. Check the available publishing route. Compare total review, correction and delivery effort alongside the account's actual charges.
Record observations in the blank social-video export worksheet. It contains no completed benchmark measurements. Choose the workflow that meets the brief after revisions and delivery, rather than counting raw generated candidates.
Where Valmera fits
Valmera is another candidate for directing edits to uploaded footage through conversation. You can review the versioned timeline and preview and request corrections. Selected story arcs can become child projects, each requiring its own finishing, review and Studio export. This is not evidence of faster or more accurate clipping.
